A Serra do Espinhaço é considerada por geólogos como a única cordilheira brasileira e uma das mais antigas formações das Américas. Por sua diversidade e recursos naturais abundantes, ela foi declarada pela UNESCO como a 7ª Reserva da Biosfera do Brasil, em 2005.

Mais da metade das espécies de animais e plantas ameaçados de extinção em Minas Gerais ainda podem ser encontrados lá. Especificamente na Serra do Cipó, batizada de “Jardim do Brasil” pelo paisagista Burle Marx, se encontra o maior número de espécies endêmicas da flora brasileira. São mais de 1,7 mil espécies registradas. Entre elas há orquídeas, cactáceas e diferentes exemplares de plantas carnívoras. A fauna conta com grande variedade de insetos, anfíbios, pássaros, mamíferos e répteis.

Hoje o Espinhaço tem contribuição vital para o abastecimento de água em nossas cidades e das grandes bacias hidrográficas brasileiras. São milhares de nascentes abastecendo as bacias dos rios São Francisco e Doce, permitindo assim a recarga hídrica de rios que sofrem diariamente com a poluição dos grandes centros urbanos e o assoreamento. Se formos considerar apenas o Rio Doce, são as águas do Rio Santo Antônio, que nasce no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro, na parte meridional do Espinhaço, que permitem sua renovação diária. O Santo Antônio é berçário natural de peixes que povoam o Rio Doce.

Neste período pós-pandemia mundial, a Serra do Espinhaço será fundamental para a retomada do turismo doméstico em Minas Gerais. Isso já está acontecendo de forma espontânea nos destinos turístico ao entorno de Belo Horizonte, compreendidos principalmente pelos circuitos do Ouro e da Serra do Cipó.
