Médico do Sírio-Libanês explica sintomas e a importância do tratamento precoce

Aproximadamente 2,8 milhões de pessoas no mundo e cerca de 40 mil no Brasil têm Esclerose múltipla. No país, a prevalência média é de 8,69 casos para cada 100 mil habitantes e atinge principalmente mulheres entre 20 e 40 anos de idade.
A esclerose múltipla é uma doença que afeta o sistema nervoso central e pode se manifestar de diversas formas. O médico Thiago Taya, do Hospital Sírio-Libanês, em Brasília, explica que os principais sintomas da Esclerose Múltipla incluem alterações de visão, como dor em um dos olhos associada a uma mancha escura no campo visual, além de dormências, fraqueza muscular e até problemas de memória.
“Os principais sintomas são alteração de visão, pode começar a ter uma saturação visual em um olho associado à dor naquele olho, principalmente uma dor que piora quando ele movimenta esse olho.”
O especialista destaca que a doença pode evoluir de maneira progressiva, dificultando ainda mais o tratamento. No entanto, o acompanhamento médico e o uso de medicamentos modernos podem prevenir surtos e reduzir o acúmulo de sequelas ao longo do tempo.
“O problema é que depois de cada surto, o paciente pode não se recuperar totalmente e vai acumulando sequelas. E esse acúmulo de sequelas, que é o que pode fazer o paciente perdendo capacidade funcional ao longo do tempo.”
