A mineração ilegal em terras indígenas da Amazônia Legal aumentou 1.217% nos últimos 35 anos. De 1985 para 2020, a área atingida pela atividade garimpeira passou de 7,45 quilômetros quadrados (km²) para 102,16 km².
De acordo com um estudo elaborado por pesquisadores do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) e da Universidade do Sul do Alabama, dos Estados Unidos, quase todo o garimpo ilegal (95%) fica em apenas três terras indígenas: a Kayapó, a Munduruku e a Yanomami. Os resultados do trabalho foram publicados na revista Remote Sensing.
Para identificar as regiões de mineração, os pesquisadores aproveitaram dados fornecidos pelo Projeto de Mapeamento Anual do Uso e Cobertura da Terra no Brasil (MapBiomas). O MapBiomas reúne imagens obtidas por satélites, com resolução espacial de 30 metros.
Uma das limitações da ferramenta, porém, é que, embora haja precisão para distinguir áreas de floresta de perímetros de mineração, ela não serve para reconhecer, por exemplo, uma região menor, em que o garimpo acontece. Pelo sistema, também não é possível apontar balsas usadas pelos garimpeiros. Por essa razão, os pesquisadores ressaltam que o resultado pode estar subestimado e que talvez a área afetada seja ainda mais extensa.
Preferência pelo ouro
A pesquisa destaca ainda que, em terras indígenas da Amazônia Legal, os garimpeiros buscam ouro (99,5%) e estanho (0,5%). A exploração se dá mais fortemente no território dos kayapó, que também convivem com o avanço de madeireiros e da siderurgia. Nesse caso, estima-se que, em 2020, a área ocupada pelos garimpeiros era de 77,1 km², quase 1.000% a mais que o registrado em 1985 – 7,2 km².
Na Terra Indígena Munduruku, a atividade mineradora intensificou-se a partir de 2016, saltando de 4,6 km² para 15,6 km², em apenas cinco anos. O mesmo se repetiu em solo yanomami, onde o garimpo ilegal ocupava 0,1 km² em 2016 e subiu para 4,2 km² em 2010.
Os autores do estudo destacam que, em 2018, os yanomami viram a mineração ultrapassar, pela primeira vez, a marca de 2 km² e que, desde aquele ano, o aumento da ilegalidade gerou mais invasões e violações de direitos humanos.
Conforme alerta o pós-doutorando Guilherme Augusto Verola Mataveli, da Divisão de Observação da Terra e Geoinformática do Inpe, o que geralmente ocorre na mineração praticada na Amazônia Legal, incluindo nas terras indígenas, é que o desmatamento precede o garimpo. Ou seja, sinais de desmatamento da floresta podem servir de indicativo para a ação de autoridades contra o garimpo ilegal.
