O Comitê Olímpico Internacional (COI) identificou mais de 8.500 posts de ataques virtuais contra atletas e membros de delegações durante as Olimpíadas de Paris. Entre os casos mais graves, estão os ataques contra as boxeadoras Imane Khelif, da Argélia, e Lin Yu-Ting, de Taiwan, que foram alvos de preconceito por terem hiperandrogenismo. A condição fez com que as duas fossem falsamente acusadas de serem transexuais, gerando uma onda de ódio nas redes sociais.
A violência digital não poupou nem mesmo as ginastas Jordan Chiles, dos Estados Unidos, e Ana Barbosu, da Romênia, que enfrentaram críticas após suas medalhas serem trocadas devido a uma revisão de notas. A australiana Rachael Gunn, atleta de breakdance, também foi alvo de piadas nas redes sociais após tirar nota zero na competição.
O COI conseguiu monitorar esses ataques com a ajuda de um sistema de inteligência artificial, destacando que seria impossível identificar manualmente tantas ofensas em diferentes idiomas. Em resposta, o Comitê lamentou os ataques e reafirmou que a violência on-line vai contra os valores do esporte olímpico, oferecendo suporte psicológico aos atletas afetados.
Também durante as Paralímpiadas de Paris, que começam, no dia 28 de agosto, o COI irá monitorar ataques virtuais.
