É o segundo ano seguido de queda nas áreas desmatadas do bioma

O desmatamento na Amazônia Legal, no período de agosto de 2023 a julho de 2024, alcançou 6.288 quilômetros quadrados (km²), valor que representa uma redução de 30,6% em relação ao ano anterior (2022/2023), informou o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), nesta quarta-feira (6).
Os dados são do Projeto de Monitoramento do Desmatamento na Amazônia Legal por Satélite (Prodes), sistema mantido pelo Inpe que faz uma apuração anual da supressão florestal nos nove estados que compõem a Amazônia Legal.
Com o resultado, o desmatamento foi o menor valor percentual em 15 anos, segundo o Ministério do Meio Ambiente e Mudança do Clima (MMA). Em termos de área desmatada, o valor medido agora na Amazônia é o menor desde 2015 (6.207 Km²).
O monitoramento do Prodes é feito no intervalo de agosto de um ano até julho do ano seguinte, entre as estações mais secas da floresta, e é considerado resultado mais confiável pelos cientistas, em que a detecção por satélite alcança precisão de 10 metros sobre corte raso e desmatamento por degradação progressiva, como incêndios.
“Conseguimos resultados importantes no ano passado e este ano, novamente, um resultado altamente significativo”, avaliou a ministra do Meio Ambiente e Mudança do Clima, Marina Silva, em anúncio dos resultados à imprensa, no Palácio do Planalto. A ministra destacou, por exemplo, que no acumulado dos últimos dois anos, a redução do desmatamento na Amazônia foi de 45%.
“Uma contribuição para nós mesmos e ao mundo, no contexto em que o problema da mudança do clima é uma realidade avassaladora”, lembrou a ministra, ao citar eventos climáticos extemos, como geadas na África, enchentes na Espanha e ondas de calor em outros países da Europa.
Em relação aos estados, a melhor taxa de redução foi medida em Rondônia, com queda de 62,5% do desmatamento, seguido pelo Mato Grosso (-45,1%), informou o Inpe. Pará (-28,4%) e Amazonas (-29%) também tiveram quedas. Já Roraima registrou aumento de 53% no desmatamento ao longo do último período analisado.
Entre os 70 municípios mais prioritários para o combate ao desmatamento na Amazônia, 78% deles tiveram redução na supressão de floresta, segundo o MMA. Outros 23% tiveram aumento na derrubada florestal.
A redução do desmatamento na Amazônia possibilitou, segundo o governo federal, que um volume de 359 milhões de toneladas de dióxido de carbono (CO2), gás que mais contribui para o aquecimento global, deixasse de ser emitido na atmosfera.
A queda no desmatamento foi comemorada por organizações da sociedade civil, mas a cobrança é por melhorar ainda mais esses resultados.
“Uma queda significativa no desmatamento da Amazônia pelo terceiro ano consecutivo é sem dúvida uma boa notícia, porém não é suficiente diante do tamanho dos desafios climáticos e de preservação da biodiversidade que enfrentamos. Não podemos esquecer que 2024 foi um ano de diversas tragédias climáticas no Brasil. E se quisermos evitar os piores cenários de eventos extremos no país, como o que aconteceu no Rio Grande do Sul e as queimadas no Pantanal, precisamos garantir que a queda no desmatamento seja mantida e acelerada nos próximos anos”, ponderou Mariana Napolitano, diretora de estratégia do WWF-Brasil.

Já no Cerrado, a taxa oficial de desmatamento, medida pelo Sistema Prodes, do Inpe, foi de 8.174 km², entre agosto do ano passado e julho deste ano. Assim, houve queda de 25,7% em relação ao período de agosto de 2023 a julho de 2024, a primeira redução do desmatamento em quatro anos no bioma.
Cerca de 76% desse desmatamento segue concentrado em quatro estados: Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia, estados que formam o acrônimo Matopiba, principal fronteira agropecuária do Cerrado na atualidade. Nesses estados, no entanto, o Prodes registrou uma queda significativa de desmatamento, na comparação 2023/2024 com o período imediatamente anterior. Na Bahia, por exemplo, a redução foi de 63,3%, seguida por 15,1% no Maranhão, 10,1% no Piauí e 9,6% no Tocantins.
