O termo Diabetes Mellitus refere-se à uma doença caracterizada pela HIPERGLICEMIA (aumento da glicose ou “açúcar” no sangue)
Tanto o diabetes do tipo 1 como do tipo 2 resultam da hiperglicemia. Porém, há diferenças entre eles. No diabetes do tipo 1, a causa da elevação da glicemia (açúcar no sangue) é a falta de produção do hormônio insulina, que é a responsável por manter os níveis de açúcar no sangue controlados. A insulina é secretada por um órgão chamado pâncreas. O pâncreas do diabetes tipo 1 não funciona por conta de uma reação autoimune (produção de anticorpos contra as células do pâncreas). O que desencadeia esse processo de autoimunidade ainda não está claro.
O diabetes tipo 1 acomete geralmente crianças e adolescentes, e o tratamento é feito através das injeções de insulina, associado a orientação alimentar por uma nutricionista.
O diabetes tipo 1 não possui cura, mas sim, tratamento. Esse tratamento evoluiu muito nos últimos anos através de insulinas melhores e métodos mais modernos de medição da glicose no sangue.
No diabetes tipo 2, o aumento da glicemia ocorre devido a uma resistência a ação da insulina, ou seja, ele produz insulina, porém, está não consegue agir. Essa resistência à insulina está intimamente ligada a quantidade de gordura corporal, principalmente na região abdominal. O diabete tipo 2 costuma se manifestar em indivíduos com mais de 40 anos, geralmente com sobrepeso e histórico familiar da doença.
No tratamento do diabetes tipo 2, a reeducação alimentar para perda de peso e a atividade física são fundamentais. Uso de medicações também geralmente é necessário e, em alguns casos, insulina.
Apesar de, como no tipo 1, não ser possível falar em cura para o diabetes tipo 2, é possível uma normalização dos níveis de glicose, em alguns indivíduos, após uma perda considerável de peso e mudança intensa de hábitos.
