Com a proximidade do Dia Nacional de Conscientização sobre a Esclerose Múltipla, celebrado em 30 de agosto, e a campanha Agosto Laranja, promovida pela AME – Amigos Múltiplos pela Esclerose, o debate sobre essa doença neurológica ganha ainda mais relevância. A iniciativa visa informar e sensibilizar a população, desmistificar a doença, promover o diagnóstico precoce e melhorar a qualidade de vida das pessoas afetadas, combatendo a desinformação e o preconceito.
Nesse contexto, é importante reforça a atenção aos sinais da Esclerose Múltipla (EM), uma doença crônica que afeta milhões de pessoas globalmente, com cerca de 14,5 casos a cada 100.000 habitantes no Brasil. Caracterizada pela inflamação e destruição da mielina no Sistema Nervoso Central (SNC), a EM pode gerar uma variedade de sintomas que, se não identificados precocemente, podem levar a sequelas significativas.
A Dra. Josemary Sucupira, neurologista do Hospital Orizonti, destaca que a EM é uma doença imunomediada que se manifesta de diversas formas. “As alterações no SNC podem gerar diversos sintomas, como fraqueza muscular, alterações visuais, formigamento, incontinência/retenção urinária e desequilíbrio. Os pacientes podem ainda queixar de fadiga crônica e alterações do humor, que antecedem em alguns anos os primeiros surtos da doença”, explica a especialista.
A neurologista enfatiza que a atenção aos sintomas, mesmo que sutis, é crucial. A EM afeta predominantemente a faixa etária entre 20 e 40 anos, com maior prevalência em mulheres, embora o diagnóstico em idades mais jovens e mais avançadas tenha crescido devido ao envelhecimento populacional, avanços tecnológicos e maior acesso à informação.
“Reconhecer os primeiros sinais é essencial. Sintomas neurológicos, mesmo que sutis, não devem ser negligenciados. A identificação precoce da EM permite o início rápido do tratamento, o que pode reduzir a progressão da doença e minimizar sequelas a longo prazo”, alerta Dra. Josemary. Fraqueza, formigamento, visão turva e desequilíbrio são exemplos de sinais que não devem ser minimizados.
Segundo a especialista do Hospital Orizonti, o diagnóstico da Esclerose Múltipla é conduzido por um neurologista, que realiza uma avaliação clínica detalhada e solicita exames complementares, como a Ressonância Magnética e a análise do líquor cefalorraquidiano. Essa abordagem permite descartar outras condições com sintomas semelhantes e definir a melhor estratégia terapêutica para cada caso.
“Atualmente, dispomos de diversos tratamentos modificadores da doença, capazes de reduzir a frequência e intensidade dos surtos, além de retardar sua progressão.
