Os brasileiros João Fonseca e Thiago Monteiro cravaram a segunda vitória no qualifying (qualificatório) do Aberto da Austrália na madrugada desta quarta-feira (8) e ficaram à apenas uma vitória de alcançarem a chave principal do Grand Slam, o primeiro do ano. Ambos disputam a terceira e última rodada do quali, em Melbourne, a partir de meia-noite – 0h de quinta (9), no horário de Brasília.
Atual número 113 do mundo, João Fonseca atropelou Coleman Wong (172º no ranking), de Hong Kong – com direito a pneu (6/0) no primeiro set, e 6/3 na parcial seguinte – em apenas 53 minutos de partida. Foi a 12ª vitória consecutiva do tenista carioca, de 18 anos, recém-campeão do no Next Gen ATP Finals e no Challenger de Camberra. Embalado, João Fonseca enfrentará no último jogo do quali o argentino Thiago Augustin Tirante (115º), de 23 anos. Eles já duelaram duas vezes, com uma vitória cada um.
Quem também vai com tudo em busca de sua sexta participação em Grand Slam é o cearense Thiago Monteiro (106º), cabeça de chave 6, que eliminou nesta madrugada o francês Valentin Royer por 2 sets a 0, com parciais de 7/6 (1) e 6/3). Na última rodada do quali, prevista para começar á 1h30 (horário de Brasília) de quinta (9), Monteiro competirá com o belga Kimmer Coppejans (361º).
Já a paulista Laura Pigossi (141ª no ranking) deu adeus ao quali ao ser superada pela suíça Viktorija Golubic (90ª) na segunda rodada.
Até o momento, o Brasil já tem assegurados dois representante na chave principal do Aberto da Austrália: a paulista Beatriz Haddad Maia e o paranaense Thiago Wild. Ambos se credenciaram ao Grand Slam pelo posicionamento no ranking mundial. Bia ocupa a 16ª posição na lista da WTA (Women’s Tennis Association/Associação de Tênis Feminino) e Thiago a 76ª colocação no ranking da ATP ( Association of Tennis Professionals).
