Poucos instantes atrás, da Sacada Central da Basílica de São Pedro, o Cardeal Protodiácono Dominique Mamberti anunciou em latim a tão esperada nomeação, comunicando a Roma e ao mundo o nome do novo Sucessor de Pedro: “Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Robertum Franciscum, Sanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ Cardinali Prevost, qui sibi nomen imposuit Leo XIII” (“O eminente e reverendíssimo senhor, senhor Robert Francis, cardeal da Santa Igreja Romana Prevost, que adotou o nome de Leão XIV”).
Eleito como 267º líder da Igreja Católica, Papa Leão XIV, fez sua primeira aparição aos fiéis na sacada da Basílica de São Pedro. Em suas primeiras palavras como Pontífice, dirigidas à multidão na Praça de São Pedro, ele afirmou: “A paz esteja com todos vocês (…) A humanidade precisa de uma ponte para alcançar Deus”.
“Esta é a primeira saudação de Cristo Ressuscitado, o Bom Pastor que entregou a vida por Deus”, explicou ele, referindo-se à escolha do nome. “E desejo que essa saudação de paz também preencha nossos corações e nossas famílias”, ressaltou Leão XIV demonstrando evidente emoção enquanto acenava para a multidão reunida na Praça de São Pedro.

O recém-anunciado Papa, Cardeal Robert Francis Prevost, de 69 anos, foi nomeado como Leão XIV. Ele se destaca por sua experiência internacional e por manter uma relação próxima com seu antecessor, o Papa Francisco. Nascido em Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos, Prevost é conhecido como o “Pastor de duas pátrias” devido à sua atuação missionária no Peru durante os anos 80, o que lhe conferiu fluência em espanhol e uma compreensão aprofundada da Igreja na América Latina, posicionando-o como um possível representante das Américas como um todo.
Ao longo de sua trajetória na Igreja Católica, Robert Francis Prevost cultivou uma relação estreita com o Papa Francisco, que faleceu em 21 de abril de 2025.
