José de Alencar produziu uma vasta obra literária e é tido como um dos consolidadores do romance no Brasil. Explorando o gênero, escreveu romances das mais diversas temáticas. Defensor do indianismo. Opunha-se a civilização do selvagem.
José de Alencar é considerado um dos mais importantes, escritores brasileiros. Um dos principais representantes do romantismo, movimento artístico-literário que vigorou no Brasil no século XIX.
O autor de “O guarani”, construiu personagens marcantes que ainda povoam o imaginário nacional, como Peri e Iracema. Consolidou a produção do gênero romance, escrevendo-o nos estilos indianista, urbano e regional com poderosa imaginação criadora.
Biografia de José de Alencar
O escritor José Martiniano de Alencar nasceu em 1º de maio de 1829, em Messejana (atual bairro de Fortaleza, Ceará). Filho do sacerdote José Martiniano Pereira de Alencar, presidente da província do Ceará por duas vezes , depois senador, e de sua prima Ana Josefina de Alencar, de 18 anos, com quem formou uma união socialmente aceita.
Desligou-se bem cedo de qualquer atividade sacerdotal. José de Alencar teve como irmão Leonel Martiniano de Alencar, posteriormente diplomata e barão de Alencar.
Casou-se com Georgina Augusta Cochrane com quem teve seis filhos – Mário de Alencar, Adélia Cochrane de Alencar, Clarice Cochrane de Alencar, Augusto de Alencar, Ceci Cochrane de Alencar e Elisa Cochrane de Alencar.
Em 1838, com 9 anos , em companhia dos pais, viajou do Ceará à Bahia, sobre lombo de burro, enfrentando todas intempéries da época, pelo interior, e as impressões dessa viagem refletiriam mais tarde em sua obra de ficção.
Aos 10 anos, mudou-se com sua família para o Rio de Janeiro, então capital do país, acompanhando o pai, eleito senador pelo estado cearense. Frequentou o Colégio de Instrução Elementar do professor Januário Mateus Ferreira.
Em 1844 mudou-se para São Paulo. Terminado os preparatórios, cursou Direito, salvo o ano de 1847, em que faz o 3º ano na Faculdade de Olinda/PE. Formou-se em Direito na faculdade do Largo São Francisco/SP, em 1850. No decorrer do curso fundou a Revista “Ensaios Literários”. Era tímido, não era muito comunicativo, de poucos amigos e distanciava-se das festas e boemia patrocinadas pelos colegas de faculdade.
Após formado, regressou para o Rio de Janeiro, onde atuou como advogado e como jornalista no Correio Mercantil em 1854, e no Jornal do Comércio e no Diário do Rio de Janeiro. Redator-chefe do Diário do Rio de Janeiro em 1855. Em 1858 foi Consultor com o título de “Conselheiro”. De 1859 a 1860 dedicou-se ao magistério, lecionou Direito Mercantil.
Como o pai, também atuou na política, filiado ao Partido Conservador, foi eleito quatro vezes deputado geral pelo Ceará; entre 1861 a 1877. Seu espírito combativo em prol das causas justas , sua honradez, tornaram-no digno de admiração de todos os seus coestaduanos.
foi também ministro da Justiça desde 1868, sob a presidência do visconde de Itaboraí, cargo do qual se demitiu em 9 de janeiro de 1870.
Eleito Senador, sua posse foi impedida por D. Pedro II, por tê-lo criticado nas cartas políticas abertas, que versavam críticas ao imperador, pautadas na crise social e financeira que acometia o país na década de 1860. Polemista, descreveu que o declínio imperial foi motivado pela Guerra do Paraguai, conflito mais longo do que se imaginava que seria, e a corrupção das camadas políticas dirigentes. Desgostoso com a política, passou a dedicar-se exclusivamente à literatura.
Em 1874, foi convidado por Francisco Otaviano de Almeida Rosa, seu colega de Faculdade, e começou a escrever para o Jornal do Comércio, na coluna “Ao correr da Pena. Essa participação na imprensa possibilitou-lhe a publicação de folhetins, muitos dos quais foram posteriormente publicados sob a forma de livro.
No meio literário, seu reconhecimento deu-se a partir da publicação, em 1856, criticando o poema épico, A Confederação dos Tamoios, no Diário do Rio de Janeiro, a obra do escritor Domingos Gonçalves de Magalhães, considerado o introdutor do romantismo no Brasil. Isto foi a causa do desentendimento entre o escritor e D. Pedro II que protegia Gonçalves de Magalhães. Então publicou em 1857 O Guarani, contrastando com a obra de Gonçalves de Magalhães.
Características das obras de José de Alencar
A vasta produção literária de José de Alencar, a qual é constituída por romances indianistas, urbanos e regionalistas, de crônicas, críticas literárias e peças teatrais, tem como característica geral a tentativa de construção de uma cultura genuinamente brasileira, desvinculada, portanto, das características estéticas que vigoravam em Portugal.
Em 1866, Machado de Assis, em artigo no Diário do Rio de Janeiro, elogiou calorosamente o romance Iracema, publicado no ano anterior.
José de Alencar confessou a alegria que lhe proporcionou a opinião sobre ‘Como e por que sou romancista (1873), um pequeno fragmento autobiográfico publicado somente após a sua morte. Machado de Assis sempre teve José de Alencar na mais alta conta e, ao fundar-se a Academia Brasileira de Letras, em 1897, escolheu-o como patrono de sua cadeira.
O projeto de construção de uma identidade cultural brasileira era a principal bandeira do romantismo, e José de Alencar foi seu principal entusiasta. Ele procurou, assim, em suas narrativas, principalmente nas indianistas, retratar, em uma linguagem mais próxima possível do português falado no país, temáticas intimamente ligadas ao Brasil, como a questão indígena, presente em obras como Iracema (1865), O guarani (1857) e Ubirajara (1874).
José de Alencar é um dos maiores narradores na história de nossa língua.
Além dos romances de temática indígena, a tentativa de construção de uma produção literária, voltada à temática nacional e à reprodução da língua portuguesa brasileira, deu-se também por meio de romances ligados à temática rural e interiorana, como se nota em O gaúcho (1870), em Til (1871), em O tronco do ipê (1871) e em O sertanejo (1875).
A temática histórica também não foi negligenciada, e, assim, no plano ficcional, passagens da história do Brasil, como as ligadas à colonização exploratória, foram transpostas para obras como As minas de prata (volume 1 e 2, respectivamente publicados em 1865 e 1866) e Guerra dos mascates (volume 1 e 2, respectivamente publicados em 1871 e 1873).
O meio urbano não teve menos destaque, sendo cenário de romances como Lucíola (1862), Diva (1864) e Senhora (1875). Nessas obras, a sociedade burguesa carioca do Segundo Reinado (1840-1889) é o cenário de enredos que têm como protagonistas fortes mulheres.
Essa pluralidade de obras, com temáticas e cenários variados, cumpriu um propósito estético e político de consolidação de uma literatura genuinamente brasileira, porém, há que se ressaltar que o teor idealista, também característica do romantismo, permeou essas e outras obras de José de Alencar. Não obstante, elas são, sem dúvida, essenciais para a compreensão da literatura brasileira e constituem a base do romance moderno e contemporâneo.
Recolhido à vida privada e já enfermo, passa assinar com o pseudônimo Sênio. Em 1876, a conselho médico, faz viagem à Europa, percorrendo Lisboa, Paris e Londres numa inútil busca de melhoras para sua saúde. Triste e desiludido, nada o interessava, volta ao Brasil.
Faleceu no Rio de Janeiro, em 12 de dezembro de 1877, vítima de uma tuberculose pulmonar, com apenas 48 anos, deixou seis filhos.
Está enterrado no cemitério São João Batista/RJ.

→ Romances: Em 1847, com 18 anos, iniciou seu primeiro romance “Os Contrabandistas”, que ficou inacabado; Cinco minutos (1856); A viuvinha (1857); O guarani (1857), o romance publicado em forma de folhetim, no Diário do Rio de Janeiro, alcançou enorme sucesso e serviu de inspiração ao músico Carlos Gomes que compôs a ópera O Guarani; Lucíola (1862); Diva (1864); Iracema (1865); As minas de prata – 1º vol. (1865); As minas de prata – 2º vol. (1866); O gaúcho (1870); A pata da gazela (1870); O tronco do ipê (1871); Guerra dos mascates – 1º vol. (1871); Til (1871); Sonhos d’ouro (1872); Alfarrábios (1873); Guerra dos mascates – 2º vol. (1873); Ubirajara (1874); O sertanejo (1875); Senhora (1875); Encarnação (1893).

Homenagens a José de Alencar

Em 1897, quando a Academia Brasileira de Letras foi fundada pelo escritor Machado de Assis, José de Alencar já havia falecido. Para homenageá-lo, o autor de Dom Casmurro escolheu-o como patrono da cadeira 23, ou seja, seu primeiro ocupante, mesmo que em memória. Posteriormente, outras honrarias foram concedidas a José de Alencar.
Ainda em 1897, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no bairro do Flamengo, foi inaugurada sua estátua no então Largo do Catete, rebatizado como praça José de Alencar. Em Fortaleza, capital do Ceará, estado em que o escritor nasceu, foi inaugurado, em 1910 o Teatro José de Alencar. Ainda na capital cearense, há, em homenagem ao autor de Iracema, a Praça José de Alencar, e a estação José de Alencar da linha sul do metrô. No interior de seu estado natal, seu nome batiza um distrito do município de Iguatu.

A Biblioteca José de Alencar, idealizada e inaugurada pelo Professor Afrânio Coutinho em 09 de abril de 1969, é fonte de história, patrimônio, memória, pesquisa e leitura.
O grande romancista conviveu com Castro Alves, Silvio Romero, Tobias Barreto, Machado de Assis, e muitos outros escritores brasileiros da sua época.

José de Alencar rompeu com a mulher amada, Francisca (Chiquinha) Nogueira da Gama inspiração e paixão da juventude do escritor. Um sofrimento amoroso motivado por uma malograda relação amorosa.
Chiquinha nasceu em Valença na província do Rio em 1840. Quando se conheceram em 1855, ela tinha 15 anos. A moça era filha do rico fazendeiro Nicolau Antônio Nogueira Vale da Gama, veador da Imperatriz e, posteriormente, camarista e mordomo de D. Pedro II e pessoa da inteira confiança do imperador.
O tempo do começo, 1855, coincidiu com o embarque da jovem e de seus pais para a Europa. Por interesse da família, e por pertencer a nata da aristocracia brasileira, amigo do imperador, por consentimento do pai, a moça casou-se com o nobre senhor Antonio Maria de Saldanha Albuquerque e Casto, 3º Conde de Penamacor, desprezando Alencar que não possuía posição social elevada ou, principalmente, “fortuna” compatível com os desejos e as expectativas da família aristocrata.
Em 1860 parecia iminente o noivado, sobreveio o rompimento e o fim desse romance. Em fevereiro de 1861, o pai de Chiquinha, Nicolau Antonio Nogueira Vale da Gama, com a mulher e duas filhas viajaram para Europa. A mais Velha era Francisca. Em poemas dessa história, acham-se descritos as cicatrizes do passado amargo do escritor, fruto do desequilíbrio social, do dinheiro e da burguesia, modificando os destinos.
Pouco expansivo, timidez natural das almas modestas afastavam dele os que não o compreendiam; e julgavam ver orgulho onde só havia isolamento.
