Há poucos dias, recebi a imagem de uma escultura feita por Jorge da Cruz, artesão da comunidade de CD, em Raposos. Era uma representação de Nossa Senhora da Piedade — a Mãe com o Filho morto nos braços — moldada em barro com traços simples e fortes. Ao vê-la, fui tomado por um silêncio antigo, como se estivesse diante de algo que não se explica, apenas se sente. Era mais do que uma peça. Era oração encarnada em forma.
Hoje, 31 de julho, celebramos o dia da dedicação do Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, padroeira de Minas Gerais. Situado no ponto mais alto da Região Metropolitana, a 1.746 metros de altitude, o santuário paira sobre o território como vigília e promessa. Desde que foi proclamada padroeira principal do estado pelo Papa João XXIII, em 1960, a Virgem da Piedade tornou-se símbolo de Minas — e Minas, por sua vez, espelha-se nela como terra que acolhe a dor com fé e
silêncio.
Mas o que mais me comoveu ao ver a imagem de Jorge foi perceber que a devoção mineira não vive apenas nos altares barrocos ou nas procissões monumentais. Ela vive também no quintal, na oficina, nas mãos calejadas que ainda moldam o barro. Como escreveu Adélia Prado: “O que a memória ama, fica eterno.” O artesanato popular é esse gesto de eternizar o que amamos: a fé, os símbolos, os afetos.
A imagem da Piedade modelada por Jorge carrega um traço fundamental da cultura mineira: a capacidade de expressar o sagrado com os recursos da vida comum. O rosto de Maria, inclinado com doçura e dor, os pés descalços, as mãos envoltas no corpo inerte do Filho — tudo ali é expressão viva da compaixão. Não há técnica apurada, mas há verdade. E
onde há verdade, há arte.
Na Serra da Piedade, a pedra sustenta o templo. Nas mãos do artesão, o barro sustenta a imagem. Ambas são formas de elevar o humano ao divino. O santuário é peregrinação. A escultura, permanência. Ambas revelam que, em Minas, a fé não é só crença: é cultura, é linguagem, é forma de coesão.
O artesanato religioso em Minas é, há séculos, um elo profundo entre fé e comunidade. Nas vilas e cidades do estado, ele constrói pertencimento, transmite saberes, preserva vínculos. Ao moldar uma imagem, o artesão não está apenas criando: está compartilhando um código simbólico que une o povo. Como escreveu Guimarães Rosa, “as pessoas não morrem, ficam encantadas.” Assim também acontece com as mãos: quando moldam com fé, permanecem encantadas nas formas que deixam.
A escultura de Jorge da Cruz não está em vitrines, mas na continuidade de um gesto ancestral. E hoje, ao celebrarmos a dedicação da padroeira de Minas, recordamos que essa fé moldada com barro, suor e silêncio ainda sustenta nossa gente. Porque em Minas, o sagrado não está distante: está nas mãos do povo.
E talvez seja isso o mais belo: a imagem de Nossa Senhora da Piedade continua viva, não apenas na pedra da serra, mas no barro que chora e na esperança que se molda todos os dias em tantas comunidades do nosso estado.
