Natural de Brumado, Newton Cardoso fixou residência em Contagem em 1954, aos 16 anos, e posteriormente em Belo Horizonte, faleceu aos 86 anos na madrugada de domingo, 2 de fevereiro, no Hospital Orizont, na capital mineira, onde estava internado desde a sexta-feira, 31 de janeiro, para tratamento de Câncer. Segundo informações de sua assessoria, a causa da morte foi falência múltipla de órgãos. Newton, que era divorciado, deixa quatro filhos.
A notícia de seu falecimento foi divulgada nas primeiras horas da manhã pelo filho, o Deputado Federal Newton Cardoso Júnior (MDB/MG), em suas redes sociais. Ele destacou o legado do pai na política e no desenvolvimento de Minas Gerais: “Nosso ‘trator’ dedicou sua vida à política e ao povo mineiro. Sempre comprometido com os mais humildes, lutou até o fim com garra, um sorriso no rosto e um coração cheio de amor e bondade. Deixa um legado de grandes obras e realizações em todas as partes de Minas, que jamais será esquecido. Seguirei adiante, profundamente saudoso, mas com muito orgulho e honradez”, escreveu Newton Cardoso Júnior.
Considerado uma figura notável na política mineira, Newton Cardoso teve uma trajetória que incluiu passagens pela Prefeitura de Contagem e pelo Governo do Estado. Além de sua carreira política, ele também era empresário nos setores agropecuário e siderúrgico.
Chegando a Contagem aos 16 anos para trabalhar na Magnesita (atualmente RHI Magnesita), Newton Cardoso concluiu o Ensino Médio no Colégio Anchieta, em Belo Horizonte, em 1959. Ingressou na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, onde cursou Administração Pública e Sociologia Política, e se formou em Direito pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC/Minas) em 1966.
Newton Cardoso foi ativo no Movimento Estudantil contra a Ditadura Militar, servindo como Tesoureiro da União Colegial de Minas Gerais em 1958 e fundando a Casa do Estudante de Minas Gerais. Também presidiu o Grêmio General Sampaio em 1959, enquanto era aluno do Centro de Preparação dos Oficiais da Reserva (CPOR).
Ao iniciar sua carreira política, filiou-se ao Partido Republicano (PR), que estava vinculado ao Movimento Estudantil e Trabalhista. Deixou o PR após o partido apoiar a candidatura de Jânio Quadros à presidência, afastando-se temporariamente da política para se dedicar ao comércio, atuando na venda de eletrodomésticos, e no setor imobiliário.
Com a promulgação do Ato Institucional nº 2 (AI-2) pelo Governo Militar em 1965, que instituiu entre outras medidas, o bipartidarismo no Brasil, Newton Cardoso participou da fundação do MDB (Movimento Democrático Brasileiro), tornando-se Tesoureiro do partido. Em 1966, tentou sua primeira candidatura a Deputado Estadual, obtendo a segunda suplência.
Em 1967, concorreu pela primeira vez à Prefeitura de Contagem, mas não foi eleito. Novamente candidato em 1972, foi eleito prefeito com 70% dos votos. Durante sua gestão, criou a Companhia Urbanizadora de Contagem (Cinco), responsável por todas as obras públicas do município, além de fundar a Fundação de Assistência Médica de Contagem (Famuc) e promover a Reforma Tributária e descentralizações nas Secretarias Municipais, sendo responsável pela construção da malha viária da cidade.
Como prefeito, Newton Cardoso também lançou o Projeto de Complementação Urbana de Recuperação Acelerada (Cura) no Bairro Eldorado e construiu a Avenida João César de Oliveira, que liga Contagem à capital Belo Horizonte e à BR-381.
Entre 1979 e 1983, foi Deputado Federal, sendo o segundo mais votado em Minas Gerais e um dos mais votados do Brasil, com 135 mil votos. Em 2010, foi novamente eleito Deputado Federal para a legislatura de 2011 a 2015. Em 1982, foi reeleito prefeito de Contagem, alcançando 92% dos votos válidos. Renunciou ao cargo em 1986 para concorrer ao Governo de Minas Gerais, sendo eleito governador do Estado para o período de 1987 a 1991. Em 1998, foi eleito vice-governador de Minas Gerais na chapa liderada pelo ex-governador e ex-presidente da República Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco.
O prefeito de Brumado, Fabricio Abrantes Pires de Souza Oliveira, e o governador de Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema Neto (Novo) decretaram luto oficial por três dias.
Velório e sepultamento
O velório acontecerá na segunda-feira, 3, de 10h às 16h, no Palácio da Liberdade, em Belo Horizonte, com honrarias em reconhecimento ao seu período como governador e sua carreira política. A cerimonia será aberta ao público.
Após o velório, o corpo de Newton Cardoso será cremado em uma cerimonia reservada apenas à família.
