Alírio era um preto musculoso, alto, forte, de boa aparência, rústico, distinguia-se como lavrador e como vaqueiro. Era analfabeto, não sabia ler nem escrever, mas conhecia os números, sabia contar até cem, era a maior cédula que então circulava, a partir daí, para ele eram muitos.
Quando novo trabalhou como ajudante de pedreiro, meia-colher, porém afeito aos trabalhos na fazenda ou na roça, desistiu do ofício e se fixou como serviçal para trabalhos diversos na fazenda de Laurentino Silva, conhecido como Fulô. Alegou que tinha experiência como lavrador e também de vaqueiro, necessidades de seu Fulô.
A esposa de seu Fulô era tratada por todos como Sinhá Dona, mas o nome de batismo era Fidelina. Qualquer serviço a ser executado na casa, Sinhá Dona, recorria a Alírio, tinha muita confiança no moço e dele se utilizava para tudo, tratava-o com destaque pelas habilidades demonstradas.
Alírio, apesar de analfabeto era muito inteligente, cantava, tocava viola, aprendeu de ouvido, era muito festeiro, contudo, não era namorador, apenas se divertia como tocador e como dançarino.
Amansava burro brabo e era o melhor vaqueiro da região, serviços que executava por ordem de seu fulô. Tornou-se homem de confiança da família, que o considerava pelas suas qualidades de trabalhador versátil, fazia de tudo. Conseguiu com o patrão um rancho no pé do morro, onde vivia acompanhado da mãe de idade provecta.
Um dia, conheceu uma morena, cor cravo e canela, cabelos soltos, bonita, que trabalhava como doméstica na casa do patrão, pela qual sentiu uma paixão desenfreada e tentou conquistá-la, porém a morena só tinha olhos para o filho de Laurentino, que só queria seduzi-la para os seus interesses libidinosos.
Enciumado e frustrado, resolveu ir embora para Paraná ou São Paulo. Abandonou a mãe idosa que se valia dos amigos para a sua subsistência e o trabalho com seu fulô. Com destino aos lugares mencionados, tinha como objetivo amealhar dinheiro e voltar rico, com a intenção de conquistar a sua amada, provando que dinheiro também traz felicidades.
Analfabeto só encontrou serviço braçal que não lhe rendia o pecúlio que desejava e voltou pobre como antes. Ao se encontrar com a mãe, a velha o abraçou e chorando de alegrias, desejou boas vindas, mas a emoção de ver o filho único, foi tão grande, que faleceu em seus braços.
O remorso lhe conturbou a mente, arrependido e pelo acontecido, cometeu o ato tresloucado de pôr fim a sua vida. Foi o fim da família.
A morena se perdeu com o filho de Laurentino, foi abandonada e desempregada, cumpriu o seu destino nos cabarés da vida
