Estudar os seres vivos que viveram há milhares de séculos na Terra é o objetivo central da Paleontologia, ciência que atua em conjunto com a Biologia e a Geologia. Pensando em levar esse conhecimento para jovens do Ensino Fundamental e Médio, a Universidade do Sudoeste da Bahia (Uesb) desenvolve, há 15 anos, o Projeto de extensão “Paleociência na Escola”.
A iniciativa é realizada em Jequié, por meio de visitas ao Laboratório de Geociências 1 da Universidade e a Escolas Públicas e Privadas parceiras. Além do acesso ao Acervo Paleontológico da Instituição, os estudantes participam de uma série de atividades voltadas ao universo da Paleontologia.
Oficinas de Réplicas e aulas práticas, reconhecimento de fósseis com uso de uma coleção didática e até exibição de filmes para reflexão e debate fazem parte das ações desenvolvidas. Seminários e palestras também fazem parte da programação, pensada para ampliar a troca entre Universidade e sociedade.
Desde sua criação, mais de 50 Escolas já foram contempladas pela iniciativa.
Além de popularizar o conhecimento da Paleontologia junto à Educação Básica, o Projeto incentiva a pesquisa e o pensamento criativo nos estudantes, auxilia na compreensão dos Processos Biológicos Evolutivos e aperfeiçoa técnicas de Paleoarte dentro da Uesb.
Para este ano, o Projeto pretende contemplar novos estudantes com suas atividades, alcançando Escolas de Jequié e de outros municípios do Território Médio Rio de Contas. A ação é coordenada pela Professora Rita de Cássia Bittencourt, do Departamento de Ciências Biológicas (DCB), e conta com a execução de estudantes monitores da Universidade.
