O presidente da Câmara de Vereadores de Vitória da Conquista, vereador Ivan Cordeiro da Silva Filho (PL), acompanhado pelo Diretor de Comunicação da Casa, jornalista Fábio Sena Santos, protocolou na tarde da segunda-feira (31 de março) um pedido formal de tombamento do prédio histórico que abriga o Memorial Manoel Fernandes de Oliveira e alguns setores do Legislativo Municipal, incluindo o Gabinete da Presidência, na Secretaria Municipal de Cultura. O documento foi entregue ao Conselheiro de Cultura Marley Vital.

Situado na Rua Zeferino Correia (antiga Rua Grande), o edifício foi construído em 1910 pelo mestre de obras Luiz Alexandrino de Melo, conhecido como Luiz Pedreiro. Ao longo do tempo, serviu como residência, hotel, Fórum e Justiça do Trabalho. O município adquiriu o prédio na década de 1960 e o restaurou para que se tornasse a sede da Câmara de Vereadores e do Fórum.
Durante a reforma, o edifício passou por alterações significativas em seu interior: a cozinha foi demolida, houve mudanças no piso inferior e uma nova escada foi construída em substituição à original, que era helicoidal. Além disso, algumas janelas da fachada e a porta principal, que estavam danificadas, foram trocadas.
No primeiro andar, a fachada do prédio apresenta cinco janelas e uma porta de entrada, enquanto o segundo andar possui seis janelas com sacadas em forma de púlpito de igreja, o que, segundo o historiador Mozart Tanajura, pode ser “talvez o único em toda a arquitetura civil brasileira”, conforme afirmou em uma entrevista ao jornalista Fábio Sena em março de 2001, durante a composição do acervo do Memorial da Câmara.
Tanajura explica que este estilo arquitetônico é característico da construção religiosa, pois, embora tenha influências neoclássicas, o prédio exibe um púlpito inspirado no barroco, dentro de uma perspectiva eclética. No topo do telhado, há quatro estátuas, uma em cada canto, uma tradição portuguesa que chegou ao Brasil durante o período colonial, segundo o historiador.
Outros edifícios da cidade, como o antigo Paço Municipal e o Ginásio de Conquista, atual Museu Padre Palmeira, também apresentavam estátuas em seus telhados. As estátuas que adornam o prédio da Câmara de Vereadores representam os deuses Apolo, Mercúrio, Diana e Júpiter, de acordo com o memorialista.
O presidente Ivan Cordeiro afirmou que “o tombamento do edifício da Câmara Municipal faz parte de um conjunto de ações destinadas a preservar a memória do município de Vitória da Conquista, já que o prédio está intimamente relacionado à vida social, política, econômica e cultural local, merecendo o reconhecimento como patrimônio cultural”.
Fábio Sena, historiador e mestre em Museologia/Patrimônio e Comunicação pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), destacou que o tombamento do prédio da Câmara Municipal certamente inspirará a proteção de outros edifícios históricos. “É um processo de patrimonialização tardio, mas extremamente necessário e cada vez mais urgente. Infelizmente, muito se perdeu do centro histórico de Vitória da Conquista, com muitas casas antigas sendo substituídas por estacionamentos e lojas, alterações que comprometeram a estética da cidade antiga”, concluiu.
