Professor da Uesb, Jorge Augusto, do Departamento de Ciências Humanas e Letras (DCHL), acaba de ganhar a segunda edição do Prêmio Jabuti Acadêmico, com o livro “Modernismo Negro”. A obra aborda o movimento modernista brasileiro a partir das experiências negras e periféricas, fazendo um diálogo com a obra de Lima Barreto.
Fruto de sua tese de Doutorado em Literatura, o livro foi o vencedor na categoria “Letras, Linguística e Estudos Literários”, na cerimônia de premiação que ocorreu no último dia 5 de agosto, em São Paulo. Para Jorge Augusto, essa premiação é mais do que um reconhecimento de seu trabalho individual, ela carrega o peso histórico da conquista de espaços majoritariamente brancos. Ele comenta que, como um intelectual negro “os circuitos de validação da sua produção são muito escassos. Então, uma premiação dessa chama tanta atenção, inclusive por eu ser uma pessoa negra ganhando esse prêmio”, afirma.
O professor também vê o recebimento do Jabuti Acadêmico como uma chance de levar seu trabalho a novos públicos e alcançar mais pessoas. “A literatura negra tem coisas importantes a ensinar para esse país. Talvez a gente possa, a partir da literatura negra, pensar um Brasil melhor”, comenta.
Lançado em outubro de 2024, “Modernismo Negro” foi eleito um dos lançamentos mais importantes do ano pela Revista O Odisseu. A obra também conta com textos de intelectuais como Muniz Sodré, Leda Maria Martins e Henrique Freitas, e já foi apresentada em eventos por diversas cidades do país, incluindo Salvador (BA), Natal (RN), São Paulo (SP) e Jequié (BA).
Jorge Augusto ainda é poeta e professor do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura e Cultura da Universidade Federal da Bahia (Ufba) e coordena o grupo Perifa, na Uesb, que pesquisa autorias negras da Bahia e do Brasil. “A gente prioriza os autores e autoras negras baianas tentando pensar a partir dessas autorias negras formulações estéticas e éticas da literatura negra, ou seja, como a literatura negra nos possibilita imaginar um diferente”, explica. Além de “Modernismo Negro”, o pesquisador já publicou “Muvuca” (2024), “O Mapa de Casa” (2023), “Contemporaneidades Periféricas” (2018), entre outros títulos.
Sobre o Prêmio – Em sua segunda edição, o Prêmio Jabuti Acadêmico é uma extensão do tradicional Prêmio Jabuti, a mais importante premiação literária do Brasil. Criado pela Câmara Brasileira do Livro (CBL) com apoio da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (ABC) e da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC), o prêmio foi lançado para reconhecer a efervescente produção acadêmica, científica, técnica e profissional do país.
