A Serra do Salto, localizada no município de Licínio de Almeida, Bahia, é um patrimônio natural de extrema relevância que representa a união de dois biomas brasileiros: o Cerrado e a Caatinga. Essa formação geológica é reconhecida por sua biodiversidade única, suas onze nascentes que alimentam o Rio do Salto – um importante afluente da Bacia do Rio de Contas – e sua importância ecológica, social e cultural para as comunidades locais. No entanto, a recente implantação de um empreendimento minerário na região vem gerando preocupações sérias quanto aos riscos socioambientais que ameaçam esse tesouro natural.
Desde 2007, quando o geólogo baiano João Cavalcanti anunciou a descoberta de uma jazida mineral de alta potencialidade na área, o projeto de mineração tem avançado com o envolvimento de empresas como a Bahia Mineração e, posteriormente, a Vale do Paramirim Participações S.A. A iniciativa conta com a anuência de órgãos de fiscalização federal e estadual, como a Agência Nacional de Mineração (ANM) – autarquia federal vinculada ao Ministério de Minas e Energia – e o Instituto do Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos da Bahia (Inema) – autarquia estadual vinculada à Secretaria de Estado do Meio Ambiente da Bahia. Apesar da aparente regularidade formal, a atividade minerária na Serra do Salto tem sido alvo de intensas denúncias por parte de moradores locais e organizações ambientais da sociedade civil.
