Um sorriso pode abrir portas no mercado de trabalho? Foi com essa inquietação que uma equipe de pesquisadores da Uesb decidiu investigar até que ponto a aparência dentária influencia nas chances de uma pessoa ser contratada. Liderada pelo professor Matheus Pithon, do curso de Odontologia, a pesquisa confirma: candidatos com sorriso ideal tendem a ser percebidos como mais inteligentes, confiáveis e aptos para o emprego.
Intitulado “A estética dentária tem alguma influência na procura de emprego?”, o estudo investigou como a estética dentária interfere na percepção de recrutadores sobre características como honestidade, inteligência e competência profissional. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida com o apoio de uma equipe interdisciplinar, composta por Caroline Nascimento, estudante de Odontologia; George Caíque Barbosa, estudante de Sistemas de Informação; e o professor Raildo Coqueiro, da Uesb. A colaboração entre áreas distintas permitiu a integração de conhecimentos técnicos e sociais fundamentais para a qualidade do estudo.
A motivação para o estudo surgiu da própria realidade social e econômica do país. “O que nos motivou foi o fato de estarmos vivenciando uma fase econômica difícil no Brasil, atrelado ao fato de o nosso grupo de pesquisa trabalhar com a linha de percepção estética e social do tratamento ortodôntico”, explica Matheus.
Como foi realizada a pesquisa – O estudo contou com a colaboração de responsáveis por setores de Recursos Humanos de empresas vinculadas ao Clube de Dirigentes Lojistas (CDL) dos municípios de Jequié e Vitória da Conquista. Para avaliar a influência do sorriso na tomada de decisão, os pesquisadores apresentaram imagens de candidatos, algumas com sorrisos considerados ideais, outras com alterações estéticas dentárias, e pediram que os avaliadores respondessem a um questionário sobre a impressão causada por cada pessoa.
“Optou-se por utilizar imagens pela facilidade de alterá-las digitalmente corrigindo o sorriso”, detalha Matheus. A aplicação do questionário foi acompanhada de todos os cuidados éticos, conforme destacou o pesquisador: “o questionário foi submetido ao Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa com Seres Humanos e houve consentimento livre e esclarecido de todos os pacientes cujas fotos foram utilizadas”.
Pessoas com sorriso ideal foram consideradas mais inteligentes e com maior potencial de contratação em comparação com aquelas com sorriso não ideal. “A aparência física, em especial o sorriso, influencia em processos seletivos”, reforça o pesquisador.
Próximos passos – Novos estudos já estão em andamento e buscam aprofundar a análise, incorporando outras variáveis como raça, gênero e diferentes aspectos da aparência. A proposta é ampliar o debate sobre equidade e percepção social no mercado de trabalho.
Para Matheus, levar esse tipo de pesquisa ao conhecimento público é essencial. “Avalio de elementar importância, uma vez que os resultados de estudos como esse, além do propósito acadêmico, têm o propósito social, ou seja, de mudar e melhorar a sociedade na qual vivemos”, finaliza.
