Dados do Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia indicam que, nos últimos cinco anos, profissionais do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) afastaram pelo menos 1,3 milhão de brasileiros do risco de cegueira por glaucoma. A doença é a maior causa evitável de cegueira no mundo. De acordo com a entidade, entre 2019 e 2022, tratamentos clínicos e cirúrgicos contra a doença beneficiaram, em média, 289 mil pacientes de todas as regiões brasileiras anualmente.
O Nordeste acumula o maior volume de procedimentos no período, com uma média anual de 143,3 mil pessoas atendidas com pelo menos uma das duas abordagens terapêuticas. Na sequência aparecem, com as seguintes médias: Sudeste, com 112,5 mil casos; Sul, com 19,9 mil; Norte, com 12,3 mil; e Centro-Oeste, com quase 2 mil pacientes atendidos.
De acordo com o levantamento, no topo do ranking de produtividade estão as seguintes médias por ano: Minas Gerais, com 70,5 mil pacientes beneficiados; Bahia (56,9 mil casos); São Paulo (36 mil); Pernambuco (32,8 mil); e Paraíba (18 mil).
Cirurgias
“Além dos tratamentos clínicos, pacientes com glaucoma, com maior comprometimento, também puderam recorrer a diferentes tipos de cirurgia por meio do SUS na tentativa de frear o avanço da doença. No período analisado, a cada dia, 45 pessoas que lutam contra o glaucoma reduziram o risco da cegueira dessa forma”, destacou o conselho.
Os dados mostram ainda que o SUS registra um total de 68.250 cirurgias para glaucoma. Em 2022, foram 19.592 intervenções, quase 20% a mais do que foi realizado em 2021. Já em 2020, ponto alto da emergência em razão da pandemia de covid-19, o volume de procedimentos desse tipo caiu 25% em relação ao ano anterior.
A doença
Segundo o conselho, o glaucoma surge em consequência do aumento da pressão intraocular, que gera perda da visão pela destruição gradativa do nervo óptico, estrutura que conduz as imagens da retina ao cérebro. “A depender do quadro do paciente, as intervenções clínicas e ou cirúrgicas podem suspender a progressão da doença, mas não são capazes de recuperar a parcela da visão já comprometida.”
Estudos estimam que de 1 a 2% da população mundial convivem com o glaucoma. As projeções indicam que 111,8 milhões de pessoas podem sofrer com a doença até 2040 em todo o mundo.
