Uma colônia descoberta por pesquisadores na região da Chapada Diamantina possui mais de 200 mil m² e ocupa parte da Bahia e de Minas Gerais. A colônia já é quase do tamanho de um país como a Grã-Bretanha, que possui cerca de 209 mil m².
A Chapada Diamantina, que abriga grutas, cavernas, cânions, piscinas naturais, cachoeiras do país e elevações de pedra monumentais, guarda também essa “cidade” dos cupins que não está aos olhos daqueles que visitam a região, pois fica abaixo do chão.
Com a vegetação fechada, os murundus ficavam escondidos, mas imagens de satélite revelaram a extensão das formações. Os pesquisadores não têm a lista das cidades por onde os murundus passam, mas na Bahia, eles ocupam o território de municípios da Chapada como Palmeiras, Lençóis, Mucugê e seguem pelo norte de Minas Gerais.

O americano Roy Funch foi o primeiro a estudar o assunto, há 30 anos. Ele chegou à Bahia em 1978 para trabalhar como biólogo e logo ficou encantado com os murundus, que são torres de terra formadas pelos cupins. O acúmulo de terra é resultado dos túneis que os insetos vão cavando pelo chão.
“Para cavar esses túneis eles [os cupins] têm que tirar muito material, ao invés de espalhar eles jogam a terra em um só lugar. Eles ficam jogando esse material fora e não têm espaço de morada. Aí dentro é só área de despejo”, explicou.
Roy decidiu estudar sobre os cupins da região, uma espécie conhecida como bate-cabeça, e fez diversas descobertas como a dimensão do trabalho dos cupins ao longo do tempo e a idade dos murundus.
“É um fenômeno único aqui da Bahia. São as maiores construções do mundo, fora do ser humano. Não tem bichos que fazem construções dessa grandeza em qualquer parte do mundo. A datação dos murundus tem idade de quase 3,8 mil anos”, contou Funch.
