O Corpo de Bombeiros Militar da Bahia, através do Comandante Geral, Coronel Bombeiro Militar Adson Marchesini, já havia alertado às autoridades e população dos municípios de Cândido Sales, Encruzilhada e Itambé, no meio da tarde desta terça-feira (28), para o risco de inundações provocadas pelo aumento do nível das águas do Rio Pardo. O motivo da preocupação, que acabou se confirmando, foi a necessidade de abertura das comportas da Barragem de Machado do Mineiro, localizada entre os municípios de Ninheira e Águas Vermelhas, em Minas Gerais, que atende à Pequena Central Hidrelétrica (PCH), controlada pela Cemig (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais).

Aumentar a vazão das comportas da barragem de Machado do Mineiro está sendo necessário, segundo a Cemig, para que as estruturas da represa não sejam afetadas por aglomerar um volume de água superior à sua capacidade.

Segundo a Cemig, o reservatório da Barragem de Machado dos Mineiro possui volume máximo de 36,3 milhões de metros cúbicos e área alagada de 6,7 km², o suficiente para gerar 9,4 MWh. A concessionária estatal não informou o volume atingido por causa das chuvas intensas que caem sobre a região, mas estima-se que o equipamento já estaria próximo do seu limite máximo de armazenamento.

Com a abertura das comportas está sendo elevado significativamente o nível do Rio Pardo e o resultado já é visível em diversas comunidades rurais de Encruzilhada e Bairros ribeirinhos de Cândido Sales e Itambé, que foram alagados, obrigando famílias a deixarem suas propriedades e casas, causando danos materiais. A expectativa é que o nível do Rio Pardo continue subindo e a área inundada seja ampliada.

Segundo dados do Corpo de Bombeiros Militar da Bahia, as 20h, pelo menos 50 casas já haviam desabado em Cândido Sales e, em Itambé, o número de desalojados e desabrigados, já chega a 230 famílias. Em Encruzilhada, o risco iminente de alagamento e desabamento já justificou que diversas casas foram esvaziadas.
