José Antonio Gomes Neto, primeiro e único Barão de Caetité, (Ceraíma (Guanambi foi um magistrado e nobre brasileiro – Barão de Caetité
BIOGRAFIA
Nasceu em 1822, na Fazenda Rio Grande, em Ceraíma (Gentio, atualmente território de Guanambi), então pertencente à Vila Nova do Príncipe e Santana de Caetité, filho do tenente-coronel José Antônio Gomes Filho e de D. Antônia Sofia de Azevedo Gomes.
Batizado em 11 de março de 1822, em Caetité, por procuração apresentada pelo capitão Francisco de Brito Teixeira e sua mulher Emerenciana Maria de Azevedo, oficiado pelo cônego Sabino Gomes de Azevedo.
Formado em Direito no Recife. Em 1846, assume em Caetité a função de juiz Municipal e em 1844 Juiz de Direito. Casou-se com Elvira Benedita de Albuquerque, depois de casada acrescentou o nome Gomes do marido. Filha do comendador João Caetano de Albuquerque Xavier da Silva Pereira, comendador João Caetano, rico fazendeiro e de grande prestígio político, pertencia ao Partido Liberal, residente no baixio do Monte Alto e da sua esposa Maria Vitória.
Dessa união resultou três filhas: Maria Vitória, Rita Sofia e Sofia Maria. Maria Vitória de Albuquerque Gomes, (Iaiá) casou com Dr. Joaquim Manoel Rodrigues Lima (médico, político e primeiro governador do Estado período de 1892/96); Rita Sofia casou com José Antonio Rodrigues de Lima, Coronel Cazuzinha – (intendente municipal por duas vezes); Sofia casou com Dr. Antonio Rodrigues Ladeia (Juiz de Monte Alto).
Em 1860 foi nomeado Juiz Municipal dos Órfãos, de Monte Alto e em 1844, Juiz de Direito de Caetité. Exerceu a liderança política no sertão, recebendo a comenda da Imperial Ordem da Rosa e depois em 1880 o baronato. O Barão, Residia na rua São Benedito (atual rua Barão de Caetité), em casa ainda existente.
A historiadora Helena Lima Santos (irmã de Hermes Lima), registrou no livro Caetité Pequenina e Ilustre: “sua índole era moderada, de trato afável, o que lhe granjeou simpatia e admiração, refletida na condução dos destinos da cidade, quando exerceu a Intendência nos anos de 1880 a 84”.
Faleceu em 5 de janeiro de 1890 na cidade de Caetité. Confira o atestado de óbito:
“Aos seis dias do mês de janeiro de mil novecentos e noventa, neste Distrito de Paz da Paroquia de Sant’Anna de Caetité (…) compareceram em meu cartório o ten. Cel. José Antonio Rodrigues Lima e com Guia do Vigário Manoel Benvindo de Salles me declarou que ontem às onze horas da noite faleceu seu tio Barão de Caetité, José Antonio Gomes Netto, filho legítimo do Ten. Cel. José Antonio Gomes e dona Antonia Sofia de Azevedo Gomes, casado com dona Elvira Benedita de Albuquerque Gomes, Baronesa de Caetité; deixou duas filhas dona Maria [Vitória de Lima] e dona Rita [Sofia de Lima], faleceu sem testamento. Declaro em tempo que o falecido nasceu na fazenda Rio Grande na Freguesia do Gentio, termo desta cidade. Do que para constar lavrei este termo em que comigo assina o declarante e as testemunhas abaixo assinadas. Eu Manoel Cândido de Magalhães, Escrivão de Paz. Assinados: Manoel Cândido Magalhães, José Antonio Roiz de Lima, Teotônio Alex de Carvalho, Cicinato Araújo” (Abdênago Lisbôa – Octacilíada- Uma Odisseia do Norte de Minas).

HISTÓRIA: Segundo registros do Sistema de Informações do Instituto do Patrimônio Artístico e Cultural da Bahia (SIPAC), a família Gomes de Azevedo chegou ao alto sertão da Bahia, região compreendida por Caetité e arredores, no final do século XVIII.
Era proveniente de Minas Gerais e teria se deslocado de uma Província a outra enquanto fugia das perseguições decorrentes da Conjuração Mineira. Parte dessa família instalou-se no antigo Arraial do Gentio (atual distrito de Ceraíma/Guanambi-BA) e, posteriormente, um ramo se mudou para Caetité, residindo na casa que hoje é conhecida como Casa do Barão de Caetité.
Antes da proclamação da República a rua, que hoje é conhecida como Rua Barão de Caetité, era chamada de Rua de São Benedito, importante via residencial, cujo nome foi posto em alusão a Igreja de São Benedito, datada de 1833, a construção também é associada aos antecedentes do Barão de Caetité.
Após o advento da República (1889) essa rua, que já era uma das principais da cidade e onde residiam políticos influentes da época, passou a se chamar Rua 15 de Novembro, em homenagem a mudança do regime político, como aconteceu em diversas cidades do país. No entanto, com a morte de José Antônio Gomes Neto [Barão de Caetité] (1890), o nome da rua foi mais uma vez alterado, passando a se chamar Rua Barão de Caetité, dada a sua importância política e social da época.
Em 1881, o Instituto do Patrimônio Artístico e Cultural da Bahia (IPAC), realizou o tombamento de diversos imóveis de interesse histórico em Caetité, entre eles a Casa do Barão que, na época, ainda se encontrava habitada e mobiliada.
(Tombamento Estadual – Decreto nº 28.398/1981). Essa ação de salvaguarda foi de suma importância para a preservação desta casa que representa uma parcela significativa da história dos sertões baianos, especialmente da cidade de Caetité.
Segundo informação de Dário Teixeira Cotrim no facebook: o seu pai quando vereador de Guanambi, elaborou um projeto para denominar a nova Avenida, do Bairro São Francisco, que dava acesso à cidade de Caetité, com o nome do Barão de Caetité. Lembro-me da sua luta para convencer os seus pares na aprovação do seu projeto, o que não logrou êxito, por ignorância e desconhecimento da história de nossa cidade. Alguém mais “sabido” do que meu pai disse que seria Avenida Rio Branco. E assim foi feito.
