O abandono dos animais é crime no Brasil, de acordo com as leis federais 9.605/98 (art. 32), conhecida como Lei de Crimes Ambientais; e 13.426/2017, popularmente chamada de Lei Sansão.
Pesquisa divulgada em 2023, pelo Instituto Pet Brasil, revelou que o país possui cerca de 185 mil animais abandonados ou resgatados e que estão sob tutela de organizações não governamentais (Ongs) e grupos protetores. Desse número, 60% são resgatados após maus-tratos e 40% frutos de abandonos.
“Para evitar os problemas causados pelo abandono é importante que o tutor exerça uma posse responsável na hora de adotar um animal, levando em consideração o espaço e o tempo diário que se dedicará ao animal, adaptação ao ambiente familiar, comportamento da raça e investimento em saúde”, salienta Vininha F. Carvalho, ambientalista, protetora dos animais e editora da Revista Ecotour News.
