Para reforçar a segurança alimentar e gerar renda para agricultores familiares, o Laboratório Experimental de Avicultura (Labeave) da Uesb criou a iniciativa “Guardiões”, que reúne pessoas interessadas em preservar e trabalhar com a genética de aves nativas. A ação é proveniente dos estudos desenvolvidos na Universidade, envolvendo quatro raças de galinhas – meia perna, caneludo do Catolé, peloco e o frango da carne negra -, além do peru preto caipira e do pato Catolé.
A iniciativa busca divulgar e disseminar a genética desenvolvida na Uesb, capacitando os criadores para o manejo adequado das aves e a apresentação do produto ao consumidor. Até agora, mais de 2 mil aves foram entregues para servir de base reprodutiva em quintais de diversas cidades da Bahia.

Atualmente, mais de 30 ‘Guardiões’, distribuídos de Juazeiro a Teixeira de Freitas, mantém e multiplicam as raças desenvolvidas. “Trabalho muito na valorização desse patrimônio genético, e a receptividade tem sido muito boa”, destaca o professor Ronaldo Vasconcelos, coordenador do Labeave.
Expansão do conhecimento – As aves foram distribuídas em 28 municípios, beneficiando diretamente cerca de 300 famílias agricultoras. Embora ainda não haja números exatos, o impacto indireto tende a ser maior, com a expansão do comércio de ovos e aves em programas como o Produção Agroecológica Integrada e Sustentável (Pais) e o Fundo Rotativo Solidário.
Entre os produtores beneficiados, está Antônio Nascimento de Jesus, aposentado e criador de aves há mais de 20 anos. Há cerca de três anos, ele teve acesso às aves da Uesb e, desde então, trabalha com elas para consumo próprio e venda de reprodutores. Para Antônio, participar do Projeto é importante para a economia doméstica. “Posso oferecer à minha família uma alimentação com produto natural, de qualidade e boa procedência”, afirma.
O Laboratório também firmou parceria com o Centro de Convivência e Desenvolvimento Agroecológico do Sudoeste da Bahia (Cedasb), organização não governamental localizada em Vitória da Conquista, que presta assistência a pequenos produtores em mais de 20 municípios do Sudoeste baiano.
Outra contribuição é na cidade de Itagibá (BA), onde o trabalho do Labeave inspirou a Secretaria de Agricultura e Desenvolvimento Econômico a criar um espaço de reprodução das aves da Uesb. Por meio da Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (Ater), foi identificado que muitos agricultores possuíam áreas pequenas e improdutivas, sem geração de renda. “Pensamos na Avicultura para solucionar este déficit da nossa agricultura familiar”, explica Dulciane Barreto, secretária da pasta.
Com o apoio do Labeave, Itagibá recebeu um núcleo inicial de aproximadamente 50 aves da raça caneludo do Catolé. Hoje, o município conta com cerca de 250 animais e expandirá sua estrutura para atender 50 famílias rurais.
