Pesquisa da Fiocruz envolveu 348 indivíduos nessa faixa de idade

Para saber como o vírus da Chikungunya afeta crianças e adolescentes, a Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) realizou durante quatro anos, no município de Simões Filho, na região metropolitana de Salvador, uma pesquisa com 348 pessoas nessa faixa de idade. Os pesquisadores concluíram que a maioria das infecções por Chikungunya é sintomática e que a doença pode deixar sequelas mesmo nesses indivíduos.
O trabalho ocorreu no andamento de um ensaio clínico de fase III da vacina Butantan-Dengue. Os pesquisadores analisaram a taxa de pacientes sem sintomas clínicos (infecção assintomática), a resposta imunológica (soroconversão) e os casos de dores nas articulações após a infecção pelo vírus (sintomas crônicos).
A Chikungunya é uma doença viral transmitida pelo Aedes aegypti que costuma causar febre alta e dores intensas nas articulações durante e após a fase aguda da infecção. Embora os efeitos em adultos sejam mais conhecidos, pouco se sabe como a doença se manifesta em crianças e adolescentes.
Eles monitoraram os participantes com idades entre 2 e 17 anos, realizando coletas periódicas de sangue e acompanhando sintomas em consultas médicas regulares, em casos de febre ou outros sinais clínicos.
“As amostras foram testadas para a Chikungunya, Dengue e zika por meio de RT-PCR (que detecta o material genético dos vírus), sorologia (Elisa) e ensaio de neutralização viral, que avaliam a presença e a eficácia dos anticorpos protetores no organismo”, informou a Fiocruz.
A pesquisadora Viviane Boaventura, da Fiocruz Bahia, foi quem coordenou a pesquisa. De acordo com ela, nos casos com suspeita de infecção, sintomas e sinais foram registrados por meio de um questionário.
“Os casos de chikungunya foram então analisados para fornecer informações sobre o impacto da doença nesse grupo, incluindo a intensidade dos sintomas e o tempo de duração da resposta imunológica após a infecção”, disse.
Segundo os pesquisadores, “no início do estudo, 23 indivíduos já apresentavam anticorpos IgG protetores contra o vírus da Chikungunya. Entre os 311 que completaram o acompanhamento, 17% testaram para o vírus, sendo 25 casos confirmados por RT-PCR e 28 casos por sorologia. Desses, 9,4% não apresentaram sintomas e 3 (12%) desenvolveram artralgia crônica, ou seja, dores nas articulações que persistiram por meses, impedindo a realização de atividades diárias. A taxa de soroconversão entre os casos positivos foi de 84%”.
Esses resultados indicaram que a maioria desenvolveu anticorpos após a infecção, embora uma parcela significativa não tenha apresentado resposta imunológica detectável, informou a Fiocruz. A pesquisa constatou ainda que, “apesar de surtos locais durante o estudo, apenas um quinto (20%) dos participantes foi exposto ao vírus, o que levanta questões sobre a vulnerabilidade da população pediátrica e a necessidade de estratégias de prevenção mais eficazes”.
