Diabetes, doenças bucais e Covid-19 podem se mostrar uma combinação perigosa durante a pandemia. Um estudo publicado no Journal of Clinical Periodontology, a revista da Federação Europeia de Periodontologia (FEP), analisou 500 pacientes que foram infectados pelo coronavírus. Os pesquisadores descobriram que aqueles com problemas gengivais tinham 3,5 vezes mais possibilidade de serem internados por complicações da Covid e a probabilidade 4,5 vezes maior de precisarem de um ventilador mecânico. Além disso, o risco de morte aumentou nove vezes, comparado a pacientes infectados sem gengivite.
Isso se torna ainda mais preocupante quando se analisa que os problemas bucais são muito comuns em diabéticos, justamente um dos principais grupos de risco para a Covid-19. As doenças periodontais, caracterizadas pelo inchaço, vermelhidão, dor, pus, mau hálito e sangramento na gengiva, estão entre as principais inflamações que têm o diabetes como agravante. De acordo com o cirurgião dentista e especialista em saúde coletiva da Neodent, João Piscinini, os pacientes com glicemia alta têm um processo de cicatrização mais demorado. “A relação entre as doenças periodontais e o diabetes é na verdade uma via de mão dupla. Ao mesmo tempo que portadores de diabetes apresentam uma predisposição maior ao desenvolvimento da doença periodontal, um quadro não tratado de doença periodontal pode comprometer o controle do diabetes”, afirma.
O dentista ressalta que o fato dos pacientes diabéticos serem mais propensos a desenvolver gengivite e periodontite apenas reforça que, especialmente durante a pandemia, eles precisam ter a higiene bucal como prioridade e um estilo de vida saudável. “Uma escovação eficiente após as refeições, o uso diário de fio dental para remoção de placa e restos de alimentos e uma dieta rica em nutrientes são ações simples que podem garantir a saúde bucal e evitar os problemas gengivais”, diz.
O acompanhamento médico para controle da glicemia e monitoramento do diabetes deve ser feito com frequência, bem como as visitas regulares ao dentista para que, em casos de inflamações, a doença possa ser tratada logo no início e evitar complicações.
E, ainda de acordo com Piscinini, nunca é demais lembrar que a boca é considerada uma porta de entrada para diversas doenças, não somente a Covid-19. “Não é de hoje que vemos a ligação da saúde bucal com a saúde sistêmica, ou seja, de todo o corpo. Ao contrário do que imaginamos, o cuidado bucal vai muito além dos dentes e está relacionado com diversos outros problemas, como diabetes e até mesmo doenças no coração”, conclui.
