Um dos Papas mais carismáticos da história recente, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, conhecido como Papa Francisco, faleceu nesta segunda-feira (21), aos 88 anos. Francisco esteve internado por 38 dias, desde 14 de fevereiro, no Hospital Gemelli, em Roma, devido a uma bronquite que evoluiu para uma pneumonia bilateral.
Ontem, domingo (20), apesar de visivelmente debilitado, o Pontífice apareceu na sacada da Basílica de São Pedro para a mensagem de Páscoa Urbi et Orbi (“à cidade [Roma] e ao mundo], deixando sua última mensagem à Igreja e ao mundo.
Francisco faleceu às 7h35 (horário de Roma), ou 2h35 de Brasília. O Vaticano emitiu um comunicado: “O Bispo de Roma, Francisco, retornou à casa do Pai. Toda a sua vida foi dedicada ao serviço do Senhor e de Sua Igreja.”.
Líder que quebrou tradições, aproximou a Igreja dos mais pobres e se tornou símbolo de diálogo e inclusão, Francisco marcou sua trajetória por gestos de humildade e posições firmes em temas sociais e ambientais. Como o primeiro Papa Jesuíta e latino-americano, conduziu a Igreja Católica em um período de grandes transformações, enfrentando desafios internos e externos com foco na misericórdia e na renovação.
Caminhada de fé
Nascido em Buenos Aires em 17 de dezembro de 1936, filho de imigrantes italianos, Jorge Bergoglio ingressou na Igreja pelo Seminário Diocesano de Villa Devoto. Aos 22 anos, iniciou o Noviciado na Companhia de Jesus e, em 1963, obteve licenciatura em Filosofia no Colégio de São José. Nos anos seguintes, lecionou Filosofia e Psicologia em Colégios Católicos na Argentina, onde também estudou Teologia. Foi ordenado Padre em 1969.
Na década de 1980, assumiu papéis de liderança na Companhia de Jesus, tornando-se Provincial na Argentina em 1973. Durante a repressão na ditadura militar, enfrentou desafios, defendendo a dignidade humana e os direitos humanos, mesmo com críticas por sua abordagem cautelosa.
Em 1992, foi nomeado Bispo Auxiliar de Buenos Aires e, em 1998, tornou-se Arcebispo da cidade, promovendo justiça social e inclusão. Sua Pastoral centrada no povo e habilidade de diálogo o tornaram uma figura respeitada na Igreja e na sociedade argentina.
De Cardeal a Papa
Em 2001, Bergoglio foi criado Cardeal pelo Papa João Paulo II, ganhando maior influência na Igreja. Participou de Sínodos e Conclaves, sendo reconhecido por sua postura de igreja mais aberta e preocupada com os problemas do mundo.
Seu estilo simples e sua conexão com as pessoas aumentaram sua reputação. Frequentemente visitava favelas de Buenos Aires, dialogando com moradores e ouvindo suas preocupações. Em 2013, após a renúncia de Bento XVI, foi eleito Papa, adotando o nome Francisco em homenagem a São Francisco de Assis, símbolo da pobreza e simplicidade.
