O estudo realizado na Reserva Natural Serra do Tombador, no interior de Goiás, foi publicado na revista científica internacional Austral Ecology

Um estudo conduzido por pesquisadores brasileiros na Reserva Natural Serra do Tombador, no interior de Goiás, revela que a interação entre besouros do gênero Actinobolus e os cupinzeiros – estruturas semelhantes a pequenos montes de terra onde vivem os cupins, comuns na paisagem do Cerrado – é capaz de gerar abrigo para diferentes espécies da fauna em situações adversas, como incêndios florestais.
Os cientistas descobriram que o besouro, ao depositar suas larvas no interior dos cupinzeiros, pode destruir colônias de cupins e modificar a “arquitetura” interna dessas construções naturais, facilitando o acesso de outros insetos, além de cobras, roedores e aves. “Os cupinzeiros são conhecidos como ‘engenheiros de habitat’ por sua importância ecológica no Cerrado, transformando-se em abrigos para muitas espécies, especialmente durante incêndios florestais e períodos de seca”, afirma o biólogo Reuber Brandão, membro da Rede de Especialistas em Conservação da Natureza (RECN) e professor de Manejo de Fauna e de Áreas Silvestres da Universidade de Brasília (UnB), que coordenou o estudo.
A descoberta foi publicada em artigo na revista científica internacional Austral Ecology, assinado por Brandão, tendo como primeiro autor o jovem pesquisador Luís Felipe Carvalho de Lima, seu orientando na UnB. O estudo mostrou, no entanto, que essa infestação ainda é rara, ocorrendo em apenas 2% dos cupinzeiros examinados. “Localizamos apenas 4 entre 179 cupinzeiros analisados, mas o impacto observado é bem significativo, pois a destruição do ninho pelos besouros facilita o acesso de animais de maior porte, que passam a usar as estruturas como abrigo”, explica Brandão.

O cupinzeiro tem uma camada de terra externa muito resistente. Internamente, entretanto, onde fica o ninho dos cupins, o abrigo é mais maleável, feito de terra, fezes, saliva e matéria vegetal digerida. As estruturas oferecem não apenas abrigo contra ameaças externas, como ajudam na proteção térmica e na manutenção do microclima.
O professor da UnB observa que ainda há muito a ser descoberto sobre o comportamento e o ciclo de vida do besouro do gênero Actinobolus. “A interação entre esses insetos e os cupinzeiros pode ser um fator importante na gestão de áreas sujeitas a incêndios florestais, que infelizmente tendem a se tornar mais frequentes com as mudanças climáticas”, alerta Brandão. Ele acrescenta que o estudo continuará a acompanhar o comportamento desses besouros e os efeitos de suas atividades nos ecossistemas do Cerrado.
Para Mariana Vasquez, gerente da Reserva Natural Serra do Tombador, unidade de conservação criada e mantida pela Fundação Grupo Boticário desde 2007, a descoberta demonstra a importância de pesquisas científicas para entender melhor a ecologia no Cerrado, especialmente para a gestão de unidades de conservação. “Quanto mais conhecimento tivermos sobre as diversas espécies da fauna, da flora e seus processos ecológicos, mais ferramentas teremos para contribuir com a conservação do Cerrado, que tem uma biodiversidade tão rica quanto ameaçada”, frisa a gerente.
Cupinzeiros mais vulneráveis
Apesar do benefício para outras espécies, essa transformação gera consequências negativas a longo prazo na estrutura dos próprios cupinzeiros, que se tornam mais vulneráveis à erosão por chuva e ao desgaste provocado pelo fogo. O pesquisador explica que, embora o número de cupinzeiros afetados pelo besouro do gênero Actinobolus seja baixo, o monitoramento a longo prazo é essencial.
Além de contribuir para a conservação da biodiversidade, Brandão sugere que a observação das interações entre as espécies na natureza pode inspirar soluções para a sociedade. “Imagine um prédio construído com a lógica dos cupinzeiros, capaz de resistir a condições climáticas adversas e criar um abrigo microclimático de forma natural. Classificada pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente como área de extrema prioridade para a conservação da biodiversidade do Cerrado, é a maior RPPN do estado de Goiás. A unidade, que não é aberta à visitação pública, recebe pesquisadores dedicados ao estudo da conservação da biodiversidade, da ecologia do fogo e do Manejo Integrado do Fogo (MIF). Já foram registradas 437 espécies de plantas e 531 espécies de animais na reserva, algumas delas ameaçadas de extinção. A reserva também é considerada uma Solução Baseada na Natureza (SBN), contribuindo para a proteção de recursos hídricos, a regulação do clima e a fixação de carbono no solo.
